Philadelphia Phillies erase the memory of Kate Smith. A Limerick.

A statue is covered in Philly

of legend Kate Smith. Is it really?

Exit God sing-along

Bless America song.

The Flyers have lost it – so silly.

What is going on?

A great Philadelphia Flyers tradition was that every game started with a recording of Kate Smith belting out God Bless America, and since we all know the words we made it a sing-along, and felt patriotic.

No more, somebody found out that she in 1931 recorded the song : “That’s why darkies were born” so she was obviously a racist.

Another artist recording the same song in 1931 was Paul Robeson.

This is the first time to my knowledge Paul Robeson has been by implication labeled a racist.

Have we gone insane? Why do we try to erase history?

It has been said: “if we forget history, we are bound to repeat it.”

I say “If we try to erase history it will be worse the next time around.”

February 20, read through the Bible in a year.

Today there are three chapters.

February 20: Matthew 25, Leviticus 25, Leviticus 26 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Matthew 25 begins with the parable of the ten virgins (Give me oil in my lamp, keep it burning). Then comes the parable of the five, two and one talent. the one with five made ten, the one with two doubled his talents, but the one with only one talent buried his. Jesus had his one talent taken away and be given to the one with ten talents. The moral of this parable is: Equal opportunity, not equal outcome. Finally Jesus gives the parable of the sheep and the goats, and the sheep are defined as those who do God’s will “You did it for me.”

Leviticus 25 defines the Sabbath year, a year of rest for the land,  and the year of the jubilee, the year when property is restored, rights redeemed, and slaves are set free. (As far as I know the year of the jubilee was never implemented)

Leviticus 26 tells of blessing for obedience and punishment for disobedience.

Isaiah 40, comfort for God’s people.

The circle of the earth: The Hebrew word “khûg” has a double meaning. It means circle in two dimensional geometry, it means sphere in three dimensional geometry. Since we live in time and space, the correct translation should be:

He sits enthroned above the sphere of the earth.

One final verse to “Ode to Nancy Pelosi.”

It is time to add a final verse to an Ode to Nancy Pelosi, she has done such a great job, in her own words: “So you want me to sing my praises? Is that what you’re saying? Well, I’m a master legislator. I am a strategic, politically astute leader. My leadership is recognized by many around the country, and that is why I’m able to attract the support that I do.”

Oh, Nancy Pelosi, she fondly remembers,

she only lost sixty-three Democrat members.

And it doesn’t compute,

as a leader astute?

Her party is burning, it’s ashes and embers!

When Nancy Pelosi took over power I penned

Ode to Nancy Pelosi, Limerick style.

Since Nancy Pelosi took over the gavel

Was our economy quick to unravel.

 She is more than bad,

The worst that we had.

We finally stopped contemplating our navel.

.

Since Nancy Pelosi took over as speaker

Our job situation has gotten much weaker

 All jobs that are lost

Since she got the post

And as for advise, shame to all who still seek her.

.

For Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader

The Chinese exploiters a life-line did feed her

Our debt load increased

Four trillions at least

We all must this fall go and vote to unseat her

.

For Nancy Pelosi, known Tea Party hater

Gets scared when the grandmothers start to berate her

It does go to show

That she doesn’t know

The Tea Party is a great hate dissipater.

The Norwegian Lady at Virginia Beach, a Limerick..

There once was a lady from Moss

whose faith had been shaped by the cross.

With God’s love she did cope,

as the anchor, her hope

Her faith, hope and love came across.

There stands in Virginia Beach a statue, donated by the citizens of Moss, Norway; a statue memorializing the dangers of the sea. Many ships have been shipwrecked on the American East Coast during the ages, and the seas have always been treacherous. Before telegraph and radio the women waited for their husbands safe return from their journeys, whether it had been a long journey to America, or just a fishing tour on the North Sea. I can still remember from my childhood’s Sweden how my great aunt Hanna sat, looking out the window with a perfect view of Skagerrak, watching the ships go in and out of Gullmarsfjorden. She was always the first spotter and sent a message to the town: “En, to, tre, hurra, no kommer Majblomma fra Gullholmen.” (One, two, three, Hooray, now is “Mayflower” coming in around the nearest island.) Their lives were full of waiting and longing, and with that, a deep faith. “Everybody” went to church, fearing God, the faith was dark but deep, well anchored in God’s word.

Which brings us to the importance of being well anchored. On the U.S. east coast  nor-easterns and hurricanes come up the coast, and during these, sailing ships have to cut sail and throw anchor to stabilize the ship. If there are no solid rocks, only sand, the anchor does not hold and the ship drifts helplessly closer and closer to land, and runs ashore where the storm finally breaks it up.

Watching the statue this old hymn came into my head and reminded me of the importance of being securely anchored.

In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

On the meaning of words: If a word changes meaning, did the Constitution change?

—Words matter. The meaning of words matter. Confusion reigns when words change meaning over time.

Thank God Senator Jeff Sessions is approved as Attorney General. He can now  address the insanity caused by the word confusion that arises when words change meaning, and people are attacked for holding an understanding of what a word means that was mainstream just a few years ago.   An example:

In the 30’s the great International Business Machines company was known for how they cultivated teamwork. One avenue was by singing company songs, to boost morale and encourage loyalty among their (all male) management and sales force. It worked, and IBM grew to be the giant it is even today.

ibmImagine this very serious body of IBM employees singing this song to the tune of: “Painting the Clouds with Sunshine“

—We don’t pretend we’re gay.
We always feel that way,
Because we’re filling the world with sunshine.
With I.B.M. machines,
We’ve got the finest means,
For brightly painting the clouds with sunshine.

—Records we make, only to break.
Teaching the whole world to know,
I.B.M.’s line, will all the time, help to grow.
When things don’t look bright,
Our products make them right,
And keep on painting the clouds with sunshine.

Is that conclusive proof that the whole IBM sales force was exclusively gay in the 30’s?

Of course not, but that is the line of thinking the Democrats used to label Jeff  Sessions a racist.

This is exactly why words must be interpreted in light of what the meaning of the word was at the  time the words were written.

And this goes for the constitution too. All changes to the constitution must be made via amendments, not by redefining the meaning of  words.
