From whale oil to shale oil to microwaved oil shale. A Limerick.

Once Whale oil was packed in Nantucket.

Now Shale oil is fracked, you can suck it.

Let the Oil Shale be zapped;

it’s too rich to be capped.

It’s clean: EPA, you can chuck it!

Oil shale as fuel  has been used since prehistoric times. It can be made to burn without processing, albeit with a lot of smoke, kind of like burning tires. The first patent for extracting oil from oil shale was British Crown Patent 330 granted in 1694, so the process is hardly new.  But coal turned out to be much cleaner and with a lot more heat energy per ton of ore, so for a long time coal was king. Then from about 1820 to 1900 whale oil was the in thing, used for lamps and making of margarine. After the discovery of crude oil 1859 in Oil City, Pennsylvania the age of petroleum took off in earnest.

Since then we have had about a 30 year supply of proven oil reserves, and we still have about a 30 year supply of proven reserves.

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0495.JPG

This is about to change. Oil shale has always been there, abundant but unrecoverable unless mined at considerable expense and environmental destruction. I remember oil shale mining in my childhood’s Sweden. Travelling even within ten miles from Kvarntorp the stench of hydrogen sulphides were horrendous, the trees died, but it was WWII and it was the only source of oil to be had. What remains today is an immense ash heap, still smoking after 60 years.

The change is coming in form of leaving the shale in the ground and heating it using microwaves. The process is not new, but recent advances in microwave technology makes it commercially viable. Fracking to release shale oil is already commercially profitable, but it uses immense amounts of water, so it is not practical in the arid West. Microwaving oil uses no water, only a lot of energy as part of the extraction process. It is profitable at oil prices above $50 per barrel. So now we have a 150 year supply of proven reserves.

Scott Pruitt nominated head of EPA, a Limerick:

After the incredible incompetency and gross irresponsibility shown in the Gold King Mine spill and pollution of the Animas river the EPA is in dire need of an overhaul. Hopefully Scott Pruitt can do a better job of cleaning up the EPA than the present administration.

Yes, Trump seeks advice for his picks,

While “experts” like Gore take their licks.

Pruitt’s new EPA

has to change, come what may,

and end CO2 politics.

The reactions are predictable: From The Energy and Environment Legal Institute (E&E Legal): scott-pruitt_2014

“We are delighted with President-elect Trump’s selection of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ….”

Meanwhile, from Oakland, CA – In response to news reports that Trump will nominate Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as EPA Administrator, California League of Conservation Voters CEO Sarah Rose issued the following statement:

“The naming of a climate denier like Scott Pruitt to head the EPA is nothing less than an effort to undermine the agency’s core mission to safeguard our environment. On the campaign trail President-elect Trump vowed to break America’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement, to open our public lands to drilling, and to dismantle the EPA. By nominating Scott Pruitt he’s making it clear he intends to follow through on those promises….”

The Trump team: A chill up my leg.

These are folks of reknown

and their cause is well known.

All honest, not one is a yegg.

November unemployment smoke and mirrors. A Limerick

unemploymentnov

So if you are one of the millions of workers, ready, willing and able to work but not being able to find any for years, you may feel like this:

If unemployed year after year,

discouraged, a case less severe.

Do not go ballistic,

you are a statistic.

A loser, a discard, you hear?

This is one of the reasons why Donald Trump won!

It seems at first glance to be only good news on the labor front with the unemployment rate the lowest in nine years. But on second look it is all massaged data.  The employable population grew by 219,000 people, the labor force shrunk by 226,000 people, the number employed grew by 160,000, much less than the population increase, and yet  the unemployment rate dropped by 0.3%. Why? 445,000 people left or failed to enter the labor force. In addition the average pay declined by 3 cents/hour.

The Trump presidency can’t come soon enough!

The last Christless White House Christmas. A Limerick.

The true meaning of Christmas seems to be lost on the Obamas. There is no mention of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ anywhere to be found among all the decorations. But, as you enter the hallway, accompanied by two snowmen is a large portrait of no other than Hillary Clinton featured so visitors could not possibly miss her.

hillarywhitehouse

Obamas’ last Christmas delusion.

The Hillary “savior” confusion.

They don’t know she did lose.

“We the people” did choose.

It’s over! Trump won! The conclusion.

On Penguins on the North Pole and the dailykos. A Limerick.

The dailykos website: Fake news.

All misinformation it spews

in this picture brought forth:

There’s no Penguin up north.

Tis climate change picture abuse.

Look at this tweet!daily-kos-penguin-north-poleIt is true that the air over the Arctic ocean is warmer than normal, but the overall temperature trend is down now that the El Nino is over and replaced by a La Nina. And the Greenland snowpack is growing at a record pace this year. When it snows it is not as cold as when the skies are clear at the poles.   https://lenbilen.com/2016/11/28/the-nineteen-year-temperature-pause-is-back-a-limerick/

The temperature pause is back! Nineteen year, nine months and counting! A Limerick. (Updated)

La Niña came in with the cold.

Alarmists predictions on hold.

So the eighteen year pause

is now nineteen, because

no sunspots, a sight to behold.

Last month’s drop in global temperatures is the largest on record,

steepest-drop-global-temperature” The pause” is back! No global warming in the last nineteen years! The last El rss_8_month2016-temp-decline-land-rss-copyNiño has come to an end and is replaced by a La Niña. The temperature drop from September to October is 0. 6 degrees larger than normal.

Note that the results are from land area only. The worldwide data that include oceans will, like ocean temperatures show a lag. That is why land temperatures only is a leading indicator of climate change.

solaractivity

The sun has been unusually quiet. Much like during the beginning of the little ice age.

How is the winter shaping up so far? Look at the snow cover.

ims2016332Russia has been snow covered since the beginning of November.

Alaska and most of Canada are now snow covered.

And it is colder than ever in Siberia for this time of the year.

cxujniquuaexqfWe can see the polar vortex set up over Siberia and Greenland this year. This bodes for a very cold winter globally.  But it is interesting that the area over te Arctic ice is up to 20 degree C warmer than normal. It can only mean one thing: It snows more than normal. Thanks to this snow, the ice accumulation over Greenland is at record levels since the September minimum. accumulatedsmb

Dump Tower? Dump Grill. Google hacked. A Limerick.

“A search for Trump Tower on Google Maps brought up an incorrect name for the President-elect’s residence. Instead, users saw the name ‘Dump Tower.’

“Users began noticing the Fifth Avenue building’s name change on the mapping service Saturday afternoon. It’s unclear when the switch occurred, but people on Twitter began tweeting about the new ‘brand identity’ around 2 p.m.

“The location pinpoint also provides the description of Trump Tower as ‘a 58-story mixed-used skyscraper.’

“A spokesperson from Google Maps told PIX11 the name change from Trump to ‘Dump’ has been fixed.

“‘Some inappropriate names were surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused. Our teams immediately took action and have fixed the issue,’ the spokesperson said.”

Well, I looked up 5th Ave and E. 56 Street Sunday at about 9 p.m. and the Trump Grill has been renamed Dump Grill.

dump-grill

Dump Tower is fixed; Now Dump grill,

Renamed by the losers ill will.

To rename is their shame

and the pranks are quite lame

Trump won! All your screams sound so shrill!

California secede? Only west of San Andreas Fault, a Limerick.

Should California be divided into 2 states?

I have been thinking about the merit of dividing California into 2 states. It really makes sense on so many fronts.

The name of the states should be California and Pacifis – after Atlantis that sank into the ocean.

Pacifis should include all territory west of San Andreas Fault, and also including the whole southern portion of the San Francisco Bay up to San Pablo following the Hayward fault. The Northern portion of the bay will remain in California.

California already have inspection stations for agriculture goods and it would be relatively easy to set up more along the Fault lines. Then as the area west of the San Andreas fault physically secedes from the mainland it is logical to allow Pacifis to politically secede from the United States.

The Limerick:

Can part California secede?

Droughts, earthquakes all make it recede.

 For west of the fault line

Decline is the byline.

From Bay to LA all agreed.

cavotes

A thanksgiving thought.

As Christians we are commanded to  Rejoice always,  pray without ceasing,  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thes 5:16-18).

This is my life verse, but as with so many things I had misunderstood the verse to mean “for everything give thanks”, which turned out to be impossible. With the meaning “in everything give thanks” that makes it possible to give thanks, no matter the circumstances.

So was the situation with the Prophet Jonah. God had told him to go to Nineveh and prophesy so that they would repent. Now Nineveh was the very enemy of the Jews, so Jonah refused and boarded a ship going the other way. A storm arose, and the crew wanted to know who to blame for the storm. The lot fell on Jonah, he confessed and told them to throw him overboard so the storm would end. They did and God    had prepared a big fish that swallowed Jonah whole. Jonah stayed in the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah was in dire straits. What could he do? He did obey God and said:

“I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me.

“Out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
And You heard my voice.
For You cast me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the floods surrounded me;
All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.
Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’
The waters surrounded me, even to my soul;
The deep closed around me;
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord, my God.

“When my soul fainted within me,
I remembered the Lord;
And my prayer went up to You,
Into Your holy temple.

“Those who regard worthless idols
Forsake their own Mercy.
But I will sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have vowed.
Salvation is of the Lord.”

10 So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. (Jonah 2:1-10)

The story goes on Jonah went to Nineveh (think ISIS), they repented, which displeased Jonah. Pouting Jonah sat outside the town and in one day a gourd grew up, gave him shelter. But in the evening the plant withered, which also displeased Jonah (he was not a good rejoicer)

 Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”

And he said, “It is right for me to be angry, even to death!”

10 But the Lord said, “You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?”

This is the true meaning of thanksgiving; In everything give thanks.

1 Thess 5 continues: 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

This too is good advise, more than that, it is a command.
