Today there are five chapters, there is not one New Testament comment in the four chapters of Joshua. Read them as history and Geography and enjoy!

April 4: Luke 14Joshua 11, Joshua 12, Joshua 13, Joshua 14 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 14, again, on the Sabbath, at a Pharisee’s house Jesus heals a man with dropsy. Noticing how the people competed for the best places Jesus spoke of the lowly Place to be sought. Then he gave the parable of the Great Supper, the cost of following Christ and finally a few words of the value of good salt and salt that lost its savor.

Joshua 11 tells of the Northern Conquest and gives a summary of all the conquests.

Joshua 12 sums up the Kings conquered by Moses and the Kings conquered by Joshua.

Joshua 13 describes the land to be conquered; the land divided East of Jordan: The land of Reuben, the land of Gad and the land of Manasseh East of Jordan.

Joshua 14 describes the land Divided West of Jordan and that Caleb in his strength inherits Hebron.

April 3: Luke 13Joshua 9, Joshua 10 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 13. Unless you repent you all perish, but God has been patient with the barren Fig Tree. Then, like Jesus so often does a woman is healed on Sabbath, which made the ruler of the Synagogue angry. Jesus takes issue with that saying you can save animals on Sabbath but not people? Then comes the parable of faith like the Mustard Seed, the Leaven and the narrow Gate, not all will enter. Finally Jesus laments over Jerusalem.

Joshua 9. Without consulting the LORD the Israel makes a treaty with the Gibeonites.

Joshua 10, Further battles, The Sun Stands Still, The Amorite Kings Executed and the conquest of the Southland.

April 2: Luke 12 Joshua 8 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 12, Jesus is teaching: “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees,” “even very hairs of your head are all numbered,” “His eyes are on the sparrow,” “acknowledge me before men” and “anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.” “Do not worry, the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say when you are persecuted for my sake”. Jesus is not the arbiter in worldly disputes, and don’t hoard riches here on earth. Again, do not Worry, look at the lilies, (my comment, smell the roses and enjoy God’s creation).  Be the faithful and watchful servant, not the evil and drunken one. Finally,  Christ brings division, even among family members,   discern the times and make peace.

Joshua 8, finally after a bitter fight Ai is conquered. Joshua Renews the Covenant at Mount Ebel..

April 1: Luke 11Joshua 7 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 11, The disciples asked Jesus on how to pray and he gave them the pattern prayer, also called “The Lord’s prayer.” On prayers, be importune, ask, seek, knock, the key verse is: “ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Jesus healed a mute man and some said it was by Beelzebub (the lord of flies). Furthermore Jesus states that he who hears the word of the Father is blessed. There shall be no sign except the Sign of Jonah, Your eye is the Lamp of the Body, let it shine. Finally, Jesus proclaims six woes.

Joshua 7, after the tremendous victory over mighty Jericho comes the defeat at Ai. Why? Was it they tried to do it in their own strength or was it the sin of Achan?

March 31: Luke 10, Joshua 4, Joshua 5, Joshua 6 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

In Luke 10 Jesus sends out the seventy-two, they return with joy, Jesus admonishes them:  “rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” Then comes the Parable of the Good Samaritan  and finally Jesus is home with Martha and Mary. Martha is busy but Mary just sits there and listens to Jesus.

Joshua 4, after crossing the Jordan Joshua commanded they take twelve stones as Memorial Stones to remind the Israelites they crossed Jordan on dry ground, then the Levites went out of the Jordan River with the Ark and the waters returned to flood stage.

Joshua 5, while camped at Gilgal the second generation was circumcised. Joshua meets the Commander of the Army of the LORD.

Today there are four chapters, the Pentateuch is ended and Joshua begins. Enjoy!

March 30: Luke 9, Joshua 1, Joshua 2, Joshua 3 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

In Luke 9 Jesus is sending out the twelve apostles, Herod tries to meet with him, Jesus fame is rising, at one time he is feeding the Five Thousand (besides women and children). Then comes Peter’s Confession of Christ followed by the Transfiguration, the next day a boy with an evil spirit is healed and the disciples argue about who is the Greatest.  Jesus speaks against sectarianism. On their way to Jerusalem they meet Samaritan opposition. Finally there is a cost of following Jesus.

Joshua 1, God’s Commission to Joshua, The Order to Cross the Jordan, “Only be strong and of a good courage”.

Joshua 2 tells the story of the innkeeper Rahab and the Spies. From this story we get the idiom “a scarlet thread”.

In Joshua 3 the Israelites are finally crossing the Jordan.

March 29: Luke 8, Deuteronomy 33, Deuteronomy 34 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 8 starts out with the Parable of the Sower, followed by a lamp on a stand. Jesus Mother and Brothers come to see Jesus, but he declares that his mother and brothers are those who do God’s will. Sailing across Lake Genesareth a storm arises, Jesus calms the storm and rebukes his disciples for their lack of faith. Coming to the other side Jesus heals a demon possessed man and heals a woman with a bleeding issue. Finally Jesus raises a dead girl back to life.

Deuteronomy 33, Moses’ final Blessing on each of the   tribes of Israel.

Deuteronomy 34, Moses dies on Mount Nebo. Epilogue: “And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face”.

March 28: Luke 7, Deuteronomy 32 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 7, Jesus praises the Centurion’s faith and  raises a widow’s son in Nain. Meanwhile John the Baptist asks if Jesus is the one.  Jesus answers: “ Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” Finally, Jesus is anointed by a sinful woman, and Jesus forgives her with these words: “Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”

Deuteronomy 32 starts out with the Song of Moses. Then the Lord told Moses  he would only see the promised land from a distance and die on Mount Nebo.

March 27: Luke 6, Deuteronomy 31 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 6, Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath and he is healing on the Sabbath. Jesus calls the twelve Apostles. Luke records a shorter version of the Beatitudes, and Jesus  adds, love your enemies, do not judge, a tree is known by its fruit, and finally the parable of the foolish and the wise builder.

Deuteronomy 31, Moses declared Joshua to be the new leader of Israel, “Be strong and of good courage”. The Law is to be read every seven years, Israel’s rebellion is predicted and as a reminder Moses recorded his song, recited in the next chapter.

March 26:  Luke 5, Deuteronomy 29, Deuteronomy 30 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

Luke 5, Jesus calls his first Disciples, Jesus cleanses a leper, heals and forgives a Paralytic, calls Levi (Matthew). Finally, Jesus is questioned about fasting.

Deuteronomy 29, God renews the Mosaic Covenant in Moab.

Deuteronomy 30, The Blessings of turning to God, but if not, God is pro-choice:     “I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil“.
