April 10: Reading the Holy Bible in a year.

Mark 9:1-32,Mark 9 begins with the Transfiguration and gives an explanation regarding Elijah, he had already come. Then a boy with an evil spirit was healed and the disciples asked Jesus why they could not drive out the evil spirit. He answered: “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” Then Jesus predicted his death and resurrection but the disciples did not understand it.

Judges 10. Things went from bad to worse with Tola, Jair and Jephthah as leaders, so the Israelites were again oppressed. They finally repented and got rid of their false gods.

Judges 11 describes the glorious victory and tragic vow of Jephthah. Jephthah’s Daughter is forever memorialized.

Psalm 33 is a Psalm about the sovereignty of God in creation and history. Here and in many other places of the Bible it encourages us to “sing a new song”.

Matthew 17:1-13 describes the transfiguration on the mount, of Jesus, where he joined Moses and Elijah.

Numbers 23 tells of Balaam’s first oracle, his second oracle, and the beginning of his third oracle.

Numbers 24 continues with Balaam’s third oracle, his fourth, and his final oracles.

Numbers 25 tells how Israel went astray in Moab.

Luke 9:28-36. About eight days after Peter Confessed Jesus to be “The Christ of God” he, James and John witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus on the mount.

2 Samuel 19. David mourned for Absalom and returned to Jerusalem, where he showed mercy to Shimel, Mephibosheth, and also Barzillai,the rebel who preferred to die in his own country. The tribe of Judah and the ten tribes of Israel quarreled about whose King David was.

2 Samuel 20 describes the rebellion of Sheba.

Today we read four chapters, one chapter of Luke, the Pentateuch is read and the historical writings begin, starting with Joshua. Enjoy!

March 30: Luke 9, Joshua 1, Joshua 2, Joshua 3 (click on the chapter to begin reading)

In Luke 9 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles, Herod tried to meet with Jesus because his fame was rising, at one time he fed the Five Thousand (besides women and children). Peter Confessed Jesus to be “The Christ of God”. A week later followed the Transfiguration and the next day a boy with an evil spirit was healed. The disciples argued about who would be the greatest.  Jesus spoke against sectarianism, and on their way to Jerusalem they met Samaritan opposition. Finally Jesus told the disciples there is a cost of following Him.

Joshua 1 tells of  God’s Commission to Joshua. The LORD gave the order to Cross the Jordan, “Only be strong and of a good courage”.

Joshua 2 tells the story of the innkeeper Rahab and the spies. From this story we get the idiom “a scarlet thread”.

In Joshua 3 the Israelites were finally crossing the Jordan.

Today there are only one chapter of the gospel of Mark and the first chapter out of Deuteronomy.

Mark 9 begins with the Transfiguration and gives an explanation regarding Elijah, he had already come. Then a boy with an evil spirit was healed and the disciples asked Jesus why they could not drive out the evil spirit. He answered: “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” After that Jesus predicted his death and resurrection but the disciples did not understand, instead they argued among themselves who was the greatest. To give a perfect object lesson Jesus picked up a little child and explained what it means to be a servant of all. Jesus tought unity, not division, “whoever is not against us is for us,” and warnof of the dire consequences of offenses and told them to be “salt with savor” and be at peace with each other.

Deuteronomy 1 starts with the LORD’s command to leave Horeb and enter Canaan. Leaders were appointed and spies sent out, but Israel’s refused to enter the land. The penalty for Israel’s rebellion was that no one would enter the promised land except Caleb and Joshua.
