Bill Nye once on gender probability, A Limerick

What makes you a girl or a boy?

As Chromosomes unfurl with joy

its XX or XY

only 2, and that’s why

it’s woman or man, let’s enjoy.

Or, as the French say: Vive la différence! But then again, the French have a fully gendered language. Everything has a gender, male or female, nothing transgender.

We have come a long way. Bill Nye, the “Science Guy” showed a skit on Netflix that I cannot repost here, it is so gross, essentially claiming that anything goes sexually, and anything is “morally” equivalent. (By objecting to it, I guess it makes me a homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, omniphobic hater.) Or, maybe I am like the Bill Nye of the 1990’s, here using a girl to explain probability.

From this we learn that the Bible is right:

Genesis 1:27, KJV  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

This is not hate, it is God-given biological truth.

  1. Given any complicated teaching there’s usually a simple version used to give kids a basic foundation, and there is a more complex version that goes into full details. For example, there are some people who are biologically born as intersex, men whose chromosomes are XXY, those whose natural appearance doesn’t match the social expectation of their gender; while it may be tempting to just pretend that everybody falls into the category of boy or girl, woman or man, there are people who for whatever reason don’t match either category. You could decide to call them whatever you want, if you think someone is a guy, refer to him as such, if you think that someone is a girl, address her in that manner, but if they don’t see themselves that way they might feel that you’re being disrespectful. You can’t decide for others who and what they are. They know what each cell of their own bodies tell them about themselves far better than you do.

    1. Yes, nature is complicated. There are only 2 genders, but sometimes neither gender is expressed well during development. The XXY and XYY chromosome cases are troubling, especially the XYY, which most often leads to criminal insanity. More common are non functional testicles, empty ovaries, both penis and vagina, in short, developmental problems that can only partially be covered over with hormone therapy and surgery. However their basic identity is still, if you have a Y chromosome, broken as it may be, you are a man, if only X you are a woman, even if one of the x-chromosones is broken. Tragedies happen, and pretending to be another gender will not solve these problems. If you have none of these problems, stick with what you are.

      1. What does it mean to be what you are? What is it to be a man, apart from every cultural presupposition? What is it to be a woman, apart from every cultural presupposition? What is it that men are that women are not? What is it that women are that men are not?

        1. I am a man. I am blessed with having found a wife. Together we became one, and my wife, as only women can do, became pregnant and gave birth to three children, breast fed them naturally (yes, it is natural to breast-feed) and together we raised them. This was not a cultural presupposition, this is how God and by extension nature intended it. The three children, 2 boys and one girl grew up and did what they wanted. They all ended up to be engineers like their dad. I have found that female engineers, while fewer in numbers perform marginally better than their male counterpart, so there is no difference in performance or aptitude. However I love to observe little boys and little girls, especially on the beach. The girls run and skip happily on the beach and show total enjoyment. The boys, as a rule start digging in the sand immediately. (There are exceptions, my youngest granddaughter does both).

        2. So what makes men is biological, the fact that they cannot give birth to children? So what are infertile women who cannot give birth to children? Are they somehow lesser? Or is it the ability to impregnate others – what does that say of men who cannot do that either?
I was thinking about the cultural presupposition that “men lead, women submit/obey” – but women are leaders to and men who work for others submit/obey all the time. Or the cultural pressuposition that men wear pants (women do, too) and women wear skirts (Scottish men wear kilts – which are like skirts.) Whichever way you wish to draw the line, you’ll find that that there are oftentimes people so close to it, that it seems as if they could go either way and not be very different from those on the other side.
